St. Vincents University Hospital, Dublin

St. Vincents University Hospital is a phased, European funded redevelopment project Completed 2007. Charles Funke Associates are responsible for the soft landscape design which comprised of integrating new buildings and car park extension works to the existing hospital site.

Within the development of a new landscape masterplan, the detail design of landscape elements required following guidelines for the use of appropriate and sensitive planting around departments such as the new mortuary and psychiatry units.

Boundary treatment was a critical part of the planning process and mature beech hedge plants sweep around the outskirts of the site presenting a green baffle to the busy Merrion Road. Semi-mature tree planting within contoured grass was also used to distance the hospital user from the urban backdrop. The site also benefits from substantial shrub planting around the building footprints. Innovative stone grass paving design taking into account student throughfare with the needs of greening the building curtilage. Evergreen hedges and semi mature trees punctuate building entrances. Sculptural earthworks and grass add interest to the outer landscape.

Both the main building and psychiatry wards benefit from accessible planted atriums.
