The site has a historical context as the setting for the Sir Christopher Wren tower. Originally part of the church of St Mary’s Somerset, the church was later demolished leaving the pinnacle tower standing as an exceptional landmark in a key city location.

Both hard and soft landscape design addressed this context; the garden promotes pedestrian access on a central axis to the tower, whilst flights of steps take account of the significant change in levels. Site reclaimed Yorkstone paving forms the curtilage of the tower and steps and to the east breedon gravel is underfoot.

Planting beds are arranged orthogonal to the tower, pruned horizontally irrespective of sloping ground surfaces. The male form of Ginkgo tree are positioned to frame the tower without obscuring the major views.
