On behalf of the London Borough of Southwark, improvements to the riverside walk (between Blackfriars Rail Bridge and Bankside Pier), Holland Street and Sumner Street (between Holland St and Park St) have been designed by Kienast Vogt and Charles Funke Associates - the same team who developed the Tate Gallery’s own landscaping. The design of the hard landscape seeks to achieve maximum accessibility throughout the linked network of useable public open space that the scheme provides. The old riverside steps and planters have been removed and replaced with railings allowing views across to St Paul’s and a new stepped public space in front of The Globe. It also includes lighting, semi-mature tree planting and new paving. At the same time two other major projects, the Tate Gallery and the Millennium Bridge project were incorporated in to the successful planning of this scheme. The Gallery’s own landscaping included 800 two metre high yews, 1,000 four/five metre semi mature birch & ornamental lawns with 22,000 bulbs planted in grid format. Client: Tate Modern |
